Kite Surfing

Kai reclined on her beach towel, careful not to dislodge the sand beneath her as she did so. Leaning back, she took a beat to just enjoy the moment. The way the sun warmed her skin, the softness of the towel beneath her, the slightly course feel of the sand as she wiggled her toes deeper. Anchoring herself to the beach. With her eyes wide open she could see the starting colour of the ocean, it wasn’t blue like she’d always imagined but swirls of different shades; blue, green and white. It reminded her of an artist’s palette, the way colours bled into each other, some intentional and some not. The sky above was clear, not a cloud in sight, and she was grateful for the parasol nearby that she could take shelter in the shade of if she needed to. Kai had never thought she’d get here. To this beach. To adulthood. And now that she had she was seizing every opportunity. She was going kite surfing this afternoon, to a beach party that evening, cave diving tomorrow and whatever other excursion took her fancy over the next week. She’d been given life when she defied the odds and survived, and she was going to live it.
